Do's and Don'ts:
Remediation of Flood Damage

Do's:

  1. Cut out all wet drywall.
  2. Demolish all wet ducts and duct wraps.
  3. Replace submerged furnaces.
  4. Consider all flood waters as contaminated with sewage.
  5. Remove all wet insulation.
  6. Wear a respirator, gloves and boots when working.
  7. Wash your hands before eating.
  8. Wipe down all wet wood members with 10% chlorox bleach.
  9. Dry all surfaces with fans and dehumidification if possible.
  10. Make sure the wood is dry before reconstruction.
  11. Dry out crawlspaces with fans.
  12. When in doubt tear it out.

Don'ts:

  1. Do not live in a wet environment.
  2. Do not bring children into a contaminated environment.
  3. Do not try to save upholstery that has become wet with flood waters.
  4. Do not try to save water damaged sheetrock, plaster, and wood paneling.
